Sunday Veterans Day Events Will Close National Mall Roads

U.S. Park Police expects closures from about 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for a Constitution Avenue 5K and the National Veterans Day Parade.

Two events, one closure window

U.S. Park Police issued a traffic advisory for the National Veterans Day 5K and parade on Sunday, November 8. The 5K is scheduled to begin on Constitution Avenue at 8 a.m.; the parade begins at noon and is expected to end by 2:30 p.m. Closures may remain until cleanup is finished, with the broader window running approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The principal road limits

The listed restrictions include Constitution Avenue from 23rd to 15th streets NW, portions of 15th and 17th streets, Henry Bacon Drive NW and sections of Madison and Jefferson drives near the Mall. Segments of 12th Street on both sides of the Mall are also included. Police may add or adjust closures as operational conditions require.

Planning a trip downtown

Drivers should allow extra time and avoid treating 4 p.m. as a guaranteed reopening time. Event, security and cleanup needs can shift the schedule. Visitors using transit should check the latest rail, bus and station information before leaving, especially if a route normally crosses Constitution Avenue or the Mall. Parking access near the course will be limited.

Pedestrians and cyclists

People walking or cycling should expect controlled crossings and event crowds even where a street is not listed as closed. The official advisory does not promise continuous access across the course. Families and participants can reduce delays by choosing a meeting point outside the closure area and keeping enough time for screening, route changes and the distance between Metro stations and event entrances.

Use the live record

The November 6 advisory is the planning baseline, while real-time instructions from officers and transportation agencies govern on Sunday. Emergency restrictions can be imposed earlier or last longer. This report does not infer closures beyond the official list; residents should consult Park Police and local transportation alerts for updates before traveling.
