NASA Seeks Student Designs for Reliable Lunar Communications
The 2027 Human Lander Challenge invites U.S. collegiate teams to propose communications systems, with notices of intent due October 15.
A new engineering competition
NASA announced September 29 that its 2027 Human Lander Challenge will focus on communications for lunar exploration. U.S.-based college and university teams, working with faculty advisers, are invited to develop systems-level solutions that could be implemented within three to five years.
The deadlines
A non-binding notice of intent is requested by October 15. Proposal packages are due March 4, 2027. The agency identifies hardware, software and communications architecture as focus areas, while allowing ideas beyond those categories.
Support for finalists
Up to 12 teams can receive $9,000 each and move to a final design review in Huntsville, Alabama, June 21–24, 2027. The top three teams will share $18,000 in prizes. Selection is still ahead; the announcement does not name winners or promise that a proposed design will fly.
The engineering problem
Communication has to connect people and equipment that may perform different tasks in different places. A useful design therefore needs to consider the entire system rather than one attractive component. A strong antenna concept, for example, still has to fit the network through which information is routed.
Turning an idea into an assessment
A competition proposal can make assumptions and constraints visible before costly hardware development. Teams can explain the conditions in which a design operates and the evidence needed to assess it. That makes comparison more useful than a broad promise of faster or more reliable communication.
The educational opportunity
The challenge gives students a defined problem, submission process and design review. Its practical value includes learning to connect an engineering choice with a mission requirement. Participation remains separate from procurement or an operational deployment; the next milestones are submissions and finalist selection.
