Downtown Holiday Market Closures Begin Before the Stalls Open

F Street and part of Eighth Street are scheduled to close as setup begins for the November 13 market.

The schedule

The DowntownDC Holiday Market is scheduled to run from November 13 through December 23, but its traffic footprint begins earlier. A Metropolitan Police Department advisory says emergency no-parking restrictions and vehicle closures start at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, November 1, and continue through December 29. The long window covers installation and removal as well as public market days. Posted signs and on-scene directions control if the schedule changes because of conditions.

Where vehicles are affected

MPD lists F Street NW from Seventh Street to Ninth Street as closed to vehicle traffic during the restriction period. Eighth Street NW from E Street to F Street is also listed, with local traffic permitted. The advisory says Kimpton Hotel Monaco traffic may enter at Eighth and E streets. Drivers should not rely on a familiar route simply because the market itself has not opened. Vehicles left in posted emergency no-parking areas may be ticketed and towed.

Pedestrian activity changes the corridor

The blocks surrounding the market include the Gallery Place and Penn Quarter pedestrian network, museums, restaurants, hotels and transit connections. MPD and the District Department of Transportation urge caution because foot traffic is expected to increase. A street closure can also alter pickup locations, delivery access and turning patterns on adjacent blocks. Visitors arriving by car should allow time to find lawful parking away from the restricted area; people using ride services should confirm the actual pickup point.

Transit and accessibility planning

The advisory is directed mainly at motorists and does not promise a particular transit-service pattern. Riders should check current WMATA notices before travel, while people using paratransit or accessible drop-off service should confirm where vehicles can stop. Market organizers and city agencies may issue additional operating details closer to November 13. This report does not assume that every sidewalk or entrance is closed simply because a road segment is unavailable to general traffic.

A dated service notice

Traffic plans are operational documents and can change. MPD specifically notes that closure times are subject to prevailing or unexpected conditions. The useful practice is to compare the October 30 advisory with later notices and obey the posted curb signs on the day of travel. This article states the planned dates rather than describing restrictions as already active on October 31. Emergency access and police direction take priority over an earlier published route plan.
