Parade, Filming and Stadium Flyover Shape Sunday's D.C. Travel

National Mall parade closures, intermittent filming restrictions in Northwest and Southeast, and a 1 p.m. military flyover require separate route and timing plans.

National Mall closures begin early

U.S. Park Police says roads around Constitution Avenue and the National Mall may be restricted from approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the National Veterans Day 5K and parade. The 5K was scheduled for 8 a.m. and the parade for noon. The advisory makes clear that reopening depends on operations and cleanup, so 4 p.m. should not be treated as a guaranteed end time.

Filming affects two additional areas

Metropolitan Police posted emergency no-parking restrictions from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Florida Avenue between Ontario Road and Seaton Street NW and on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue between Marion Barry Avenue and V Street SE. Intermittent closures also include those segments and Shannon Place SE between Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and V Street.

A separate air notice

AlertDC announced that the U.S. military plans a flyover at Northwest Stadium at 1 p.m. The notice identifies the time and location but does not describe aircraft, route or duration. Residents may hear unusual aircraft noise. The alert should not be interpreted as permission to enter restricted areas or stop on roads to watch the flight.

Why the advisories must stay separate

The parade, film detail and flyover are distinct operations issued through different official channels. A traveler going between downtown, Adams Morgan and Southeast may encounter more than one restriction even though no single advisory covers the full trip. Parking signs, police direction and real-time transit information take precedence over an advance list when conditions change.

Practical planning for the day

Travelers should allow extra time, use rail or bus service where practical and avoid relying on curb access inside posted zones. Vehicles left in emergency no-parking areas can be ticketed and towed. Event times are stated as scheduled because this report was published before all activities concluded; later police and transportation notices will control any extension or early reopening.

Agency claims are identified as such; an allegation, charge or scheduled event is not presented as a finding, conviction or completed event.
