Capitals Erase Most of Four-Goal Deficit but Fall 6-5 to Dallas

Washington scored five times after falling behind 4-0, but the late rally ended one goal short against the Stars.

A steep second-period hole

The Washington Capitals lost 6-5 to the Dallas Stars on November 3 at Capital One Arena after trailing 4-0. Dallas forward Jason Robertson scored three consecutive goals in a span of 5 minutes 20 seconds during the second period. Washington changed goaltenders after four goals on 11 shots against Logan Thompson, bringing Charlie Lindgren into the game.

Washington's response

The Capitals scored three times before the second intermission, including two power-play goals, to reduce the deficit. Jordan Kyrou finished with a goal and two assists. Ryan Leonard and Jakob Chychrun each recorded a goal and an assist, while Dylan Strome had two assists. The production turned a one-sided middle period into a competitive final twenty minutes.

The decisive sequence

Dallas extended its lead to 6-3 early in the third period. Washington answered through Justin Sourdif at 12:55, then Leonard scored with the extra attacker to make it a one-goal game. The Capitals did not find an equalizer. The score shows both the strength of the rally and the cost of the earlier deficit; late offense could narrow the margin but not recover the standings point.

What the box score says

Washington moved to 8-6-0 and lost a second consecutive game. Dallas improved to 9-5-1. The result should not be recast as a moral victory, but the scoring distribution and special-teams response give coaches specific material for review. A comeback is most useful when it identifies repeatable play rather than becoming a substitute for examining how four goals were conceded so quickly.

The next focus

The Capitals' task is to carry the productive elements forward without normalizing recovery from large deficits. Goaltending decisions, defensive coverage and the sequence around Robertson's hat trick will matter in video review.
