America.gov Order Sets a New Direction for Federal Services

A September 29 directive proposes a unified federal service portal while preserving existing ways to reach agencies.

One entry point, many agencies

President Donald Trump directed the establishment of America.gov as a unified entry point for federal information and covered services. The order assigns the General Services Administration responsibility for the portal and calls for integration with Login.gov.

What remains available

The directive preserves telephone, mail, in-person and agency-specific digital services. It also leaves agencies responsible for their own records and statutory decisions. Covered services generally serve more than 100,000 users annually and allow online access or applications; the order contains exclusions, including IRS tax filing.

Implementation comes next

The Office of Management and Budget has 90 days to issue an implementation memorandum. Agencies must identify covered services and connect existing forms and systems securely. The order describes a future operating model; it does not establish that every federal transaction is already available through the new portal.
